Day 5: The purpose of Social Media

We all are using Social Media like crazy. Everybody has their favorite one. Some like tweeting on twitter, some like sharing stories on Instagram, some love Snapchat. But what is the core purpose of using any Social Media?

Initially, the first Social Media I had used was Facebook, obviously. The main purpose of using it is to communicate with friends.

But today the purpose of social media is becoming more than just communication. The only core of establishing your online profile is communicating. But the question arises what and to whom (apart of friends)?

There are lots of social media with different features and hence purposes to use. I also have accounts on different social media.

Using different social media, and switching among those and consuming content, makes me feel to wonder, why not all of the things we need from “social media” could be at one place. But the answer is no. Because that means the creation of a monopoly. And, a monopoly in social media could be dangerous. We all know about the Facebook data breach.

However, the usage of Social Media will not stop. I don’t know about others, but for me no. If one social media degrades, people will switch to another.

TikTok, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Twitter is examples of why we are investing time in it instead of Facebook Family ( WhatsApp, Messenger, & Instagram ). Even now Youtube also has some sort of social media features like posts and stories.

Learning and knowing all of this still makes me tired of using all these social media together. Because if the purpose of Social Media is not cleared then what’s the use of investing your precious currency offered by the universe, time.

So today I am gonna find the purpose of Social Media for me. Well, it might help you too.

Using any Social media could be looking in two ways, individuals or groups. Because the majority decides the orientation in them.

Individually involves using a personal or professional level individually. And using in group means, the Social profile of some community, group, organization, or company.

The purpose of using could be personal or professional. For me, using social media for professional purposes is the 100% satisfying answer. So if I have any profession or business project or idea, social media is great to market that for free. However, you need to show persistence and consistency (which I lack sometimes and working on it).

But what is the use of Social Media at a personal level?

Communication with friends and families. Making new connections.
Following others to whom you are curious about. (Most of them are using Social Media for this. It’s not a bad thing. It’s not stalking. However, it looks like that. But sometimes you are just inspired by or admired to other people or his/her work and you just need a formal connection to look into. It is similar of following your favorite celebrities on Social Media) IT’S NOT STALKING I REPEAT. Well if the distance between a formal connection tends to decreases gradually without the other’s consent then report immediately such accounts, there are a lot more cases of online bullying, stalking, and many similar incidents. Always know the difference between a formal connection vs stalking.
Sharing something to others that has value ( more for you obviously than for others. most of the time).
Sharing your pics and videos. (With the advancement in social media there are now Selfie Photography Artists. I am not saying that they are useless, I am just saying that is there any kind trigonometry of clicking your photo from front cameras. Well, there should be some books on it.)
Consuming content of which you are hungry. Like jokes, stories, related videos, could be anything, and most of the time it is “could be anything”.

So here is the list of the purpose of using Social Media. For me the fifth point is like 90%, then the 3rd point with 9% and 2nd point holds around 1%. Tell me your percentage.

Social Media to use out there:

1. Instagram

Everybody loves this social media because of its private connection thing and sharing photos and videos. That’s normal.

But there is a lot more important stuff that really makes it something great.

I remember once there was an event in Noida about some kind of Book Launch. And at that time I was doing some research on such events for my work, so Instagram helps me to achieve it.

I wasn’t going to that event. But attended it like a pro. I know who came to that event, the live videos, and other stuff. I consuming the event news with the delay of a few minutes. How?

Simply searching for the venue of the event. And the people are just posting insanely about the event, some posting the videos some of the author’s interview and “authors reading” event.

At that time I came to know what really Social Media can do.

2. Facebook

I really become tired of using Facebook. Why? I don’t know really. But it may be due to using it for a very long time.

Like it is the ancient social media of the world we all know that. After a few centuries if homo-sapiens shouldn’t exist then it will go to earn the tag “Ancient Social Media” with like 100 billion historical accounts.

HAHAHA! Maybe this could be a reason I should use Facebook more intensely. Because the account will be going to remain in existence.

I am stopping this nonsense right here. But it is so much fun to think this way about “The Ancient Social Media”. Hahaha. I am having fun.

3. Linkedin

This is my favorite one. The all professionalism and socialism at one place. Your 9-5 experience here and personal experience on other social media.

That’s why Linkedin is great. Because here the mass is consuming and sharing content that’s personal to them at the professional level.

It’s really really time-investing Social Media if you have a business, idea, or concept to talk about.

4. Pinterest

This is also nice.

I like the image search feature on Pinterest. And your pinboards concept.

You will get an accurate image search on Pinterest. It’s like a network of images.

Another great thing about social media is that people don’t really care about the accounts on the platform. Yes! you can observe that many accounts have millions of unique visits and still have fewer followers. I think that’s why Pinterest gave its users access to the feature of the unique visit. Because that’ what important in Pinterest.

It’s really great platform to drive traffic at a particular point. Like driving traffic to your youtube channel start posting related and relevant stuff on Pinterest.

Well, infographics are king on Pinterest. On any other social media presenting infographics is time-consuming and well not that much presentable in less time.

But interested makes this super simple.

5. Twitter

Tweeting is like a work that’s using a lot nowadays on social media. We rarely hear that some celebrities/politicians share some information on Facebook. But we are hearing often that like CM tweeted about this …. or PM congratulates by tweeting…

Twitter is like social media for increasing GK. You just have to follow a particular hashtag and you all are set. It’s obvious because Twitter was the first one using #.

Some other ones

Well, here some of the other ones which I rarely use, Tumblr, Snapchat, TikTok. VK and more.

Tumblr is good for blogging. Like Amitabh Bachan’s official blog on Tumblr is an example.

I don’t know about something great about Snapchat and Tiktok. One is super closed and the other one is mostly used by teenagers.

My Plan

Well, the plan is simple and however, I have researched. The making thing I hate is using every Social Media similarly.

If someone posting something on any social media. They start copying and pasting similar content on different social media as well. I hate this approach.

Every social media is different so we have to put different kinds of content there. That makes your social presence exclusive and well organized. And your thoughts work very much like focused.

What to write, what to share, where to share? These kinds of questions could be easily answered.

I think everybody should have a blog. Either use Tumblr, Blogger, or WordPress.com.

What I am going to do it with social media. I will share that tomorrow.

I have to decide and a little bit organized what I have researched so far.
