Well well well! After so long. It’s time to write something interesting. Something intruiging. It’s 00:18, a winter night, and there is just the sound of my laptop fans and me typing. Loving it!

Are you a polymath or specialist?

A polymath is a person who has very broad knowledge on diverse topics. Or simply a person who has expertise in different fields.

Specialists are the ones who specialise in only one topic. But they have in-depth knowledge in that, more than a polymath, obviously because they gave more time to it. Scientifically, one has to give at least 1000 hours to a field to become an expert in that.

Examples of some of the Polymath are Leonardo da Vinci, Rabindranath Tagore, Elon Musk, Nikola Tesla, or Sherlock Holmes (if we are taking fictional characters into the list).

Most of us are none, but in the future, or when we die, would we be known for a single thing or for multiple things in the professional context?

Do you want to die a polymath or a specialist?

Obviously polymath.

It is not our style to focus solely on learning and excelling in one field, neglecting the rest. As a matter of fact, we wanted to become polymath in our childhood.

That’s not MY cup of tea! (writing while sipping from the cup of tea)

Why can we all be polymath?

The answer is quite simple.

We can create anything or everything at least once. Or at least we can try while following the professional steps and having enough knowledge.

There’s a person on TED talk who claims that we can learn anything within 20 hours.

You may not be a great songwriter, but there is some song that you can create from the experience of your life; that would be the best song that you can create. And that song stands out; it has something unique.

You may not write consistent poems, but you can still write a few poems that come from your experience. And those poems stand out.

You may not play a lot of tennis tournaments, but you can play a few tournaments to test your potential. Those tournaments are worth it.

And every now and then you explore or resume your exploration for your other professional interests.

We are polymath on the creative aspect, and hence born polymath. But professionally, we can’t explore multiple fields together; hence, we were raised as specialists.

D.M.

How to be “that child” again?

Just by being curious!
